Cost of Living

Delivering cost of living relief is the Cook Labor Government's top priority. We're working hard to ease cost of living pressures by slashing power bills, making public transport cheaper with capped fares and free travel for students, and providing free TAFE courses.

Here are some of the things we're doing to help Western Australians with the cost of living:

  • Slashed $700 off household power bills in 2024, bringing total power bill relief to $2,100 since 2020.
  • Delivered the WA Student Assistance Payment - providing $150 for each kindergartener and primary school student and $250 for each secondary school student.
  • Capping Public Transport fares to a single zone, costing no more than $2.70 with a Smartrider.
  • Made Public Transport free for students travelling to and from school, and free for everyone on Sundays.
  • Made 130 priority TAFE courses free, and giving payments of $1,000 for construction apprentices after they complete their training milestones for tools and safety equipment.
  • More than doubling the KidSport vouchers program to $500, helping parents cover the cost of kids in sport.
  • Investing $2.4 million to help WA families experiencing cost-of-living pressures cover the cost of school camps.
  • Introduced the WA Rent Relief Program, giving tenants at risk of eviction up to $5,000 in direct rental support.
  • Introducing a trial of free, optional full-time kindy, saving WA families thousands on the cost of childcare.
  • Committing $37 million to expand the School Breakfast Program to roll it out to every school that needs it, five days a week.
  • Supporting regional pensioners by increasing the Regional Pensioner Travel card, bringing its value up to $775 per year.
  • Saving WA seniors four cents a litre on fuel at United service stations right across Australia.
